I Chose Chiropractic Care through Desperation
My personal experience is probably like many ambitious men in their 30's. Building a career, working long hours, travelling into and around London clocking up around 50,000 miles a year, having a young son who I really only saw at weekends. All this stress and strain soon led to me developing a stiff and painful back which eventually travelled into my legs.
I chose chiropractic care through desperation after realising that my energy levels and ability to work were getting less and less each year. When I became a chiropractic patient it slowly dawned on me that here was a possible career change that looked very interesting and would help my fitness levels and enthusiasm return.
I enrolled at the Anglo-European College of Chiropractic in sunny Bournemouth. Years before I had obtained a degree in Chartered Surveying. But I was soon to discover that that degree was child's play in comparison with the sheer volume and complexity of the chiropractic course, combined with the long hours of practical technique classes and self practice. In fact, I was blissfully unaware when I decided to apply for the course that it would take four years full time which then changed to five years.
My aim as a chiropractor
We live in a fast-moving, highly stressful society which takes its toll over the years both mentally and physically. My aim is to improve your ability to handle the mental load by improving your physical health over the long term. This is the biggest challenge because providing short term relief with chiropractic is generally straightforward although not always quick, but isn’t a long term solution. Therefore, the patients who provide me with the greatest satisfaction and sense of achievement are those who want lifetime health and continue with chiropractic treatment. Anything less than this is frustrating because I know they are not reaching their full potential.
What’s more, keeping to a health habit is not easy because of confusing messages from many 'experts'. I have been married for 25 years and have an adult son of 22 who is a biochemist. We discuss health a great deal in terms of nutrition, exercise, mindset and natural therapies. For instance, my son suffered from severe eczema as a baby and only found relief from Chinese herbs bought in Soho.
This lead me to be more open-minded and I realised that there are many ways to achieve optimum health. Chiropractic is just one of them and has a most powerful and direct influence on our body and mind. Chiropractic has prevented many of my patients from having to undergo surgery and has provided a solution for people who had previously lived with a painful condition for most of their lives.
Enjoying more activities
In addition to chiropractic care I firmly believe that appropriate exercise can be enjoyed by everybody and new activities can be tried with proper planning. I like to cycle, swim and go to the gym. In the last few years I have learned to scuba dive, sail and ski - all to a basic level! I have started to enter cross-country cycle races and am considering a triathlon. I am certainly not super-fit but am willing to push myself beyond my comfort zone - which is a little like starting chiropractic for many people.
